in 1714 entitled "The Healthful Medicine Chest" contains numerous treatments for general ailments including disorders of the eye. The cures for the eye include the following: "powder for defective sight", "snuff powder for dry eyes", "excellent eye salve", "Eyewash", "acetum to fortify the eyes", cures for "wasting of the eye-balls", "weak eyes", "children“s eyes", "running eyes", "running and red eyes", "eyes that have been hit", "newly blinded eyes to make them see again", "people who fear a cataract may be starting", "fleshy and weak eyes", "stone-blind eyes", "when you have a speck of dust in your eye", and "for painful eyebraws". The recommended medicines are composed of the following ingredients: sugar candy, nutmeg, liver, mastic, fennel, forget-me-not, lavender, roses, eyebright, pistachio nut, bran, valerian, juniper berry, capercaillie“s eyes, egg, laurel, saffron, hare drippings, sage, ginger, turpentine, crickets, lead dross and urine.
