JOHANN CHRISTIAN REIL (1759-1813) PHYSICIAN GOETHE'S IN HALLE
M. Tost
The 250th anniversary of J. W. Goethe's birthday is the reason to remember his visits in Halle between 1802 and 1805. Goethe (1749-1832) attended Bad Lauchstädt for the present and there he opened the new theatre-building. Afterwards Goethe wanted to see special institutions like the botanic-garden, Meckel's Anatomical Collection, the Schola Clinica etc. and to meet the famous professors of the Universitas Fridiciana and high personalities of the town. J. Chr. Reil was well known and noticed by Goethe since 1795. Now Goethe used the opportunity for scientific discussions and for consulting Reil because of his own disease. The curriculum vitae of Reil, his relation to pietism and romanticism, his contributions to the macula lutea and the new-born-blennorrhoe will be reviewed, just as Goethe's eye disease.
