The Croat Juraj Julije Klovic (Georgius Julius Clovius Croata) ( 1498-1578 ), better known as Don Giulio Clovio, was the prominent miniaturist and painter. He lived and worked in Italy, mostly in Rome, in the time of high renaissance and mannerism.
Giulio Clovio was an excellent painter and illuminator. He illuminated a great number of sacred and profane manuscripts. His the best known masterpieces are The Book of Hours, known as the Farnese Hours (New York, Pierpont Morgan Library), Commentary on St.Paul's Epistle to the Romans (London, Sloane Museum) and Stuart de Rothesay Hours (London, British Library).
During his life and work Clovio had some eye incoviniences. From the Clovio's correspondence with his contemporaries and from his portraits we can learn about his eye disease and even about the medical treatment.
