DEPICTION OF EYEGLASSES IN NUMISMATICS
G. Vesper
Every since the 15th century, eyeglasses can be seen on many coins and medals. In symbolised form, they embody relaxed attention and clear intellect in connection with the owl symbol; in connection with the hour glass, candlelight and skull symbols, eyeglasses depict clear recognition of earthly transience.
At the end of the 19th century and during the 20th century, persons with eyeglasses and pince-nez were frequently depicted in various fashions of design and, depending on the person being portrayed in each instance, these depictions stand for the clear view of these persons in the field of arts and science, politics and business.
