MAX LINDE, MD, A LUEBECK OPHTHALMOLOGIST

C. Meyer

The Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (1863 -1944) owes his rise and success to a large extent to the support in the early years by the German ophthalmologist Max Linde, MD who bought his paintings and organized exhibitions. This paved the way to the expressionist's initial success and major breakthrough. Linde possessed one of Europe's most important private collections of modern art at the beginning of the twentieth century. This modern art expert always had an open mind for young artists, supported them and bought their works. He was particularly close to Edvard Munch, but also to Auguste Rodin and Max Liebermann, which could be confirmed in unpublished letters. With much fascination, Linde wrote the book, "Edvard Munch und die Kunst der Zukunft" (E.M. and the Art of the Future), and became the key figure in the early years for Munch's artistic and personal metamorphosis from the little known Norwegian artist to the world-famous expressionist.
