LASERTHERAPY FOR TREATMENT OF ROP

R. Vamos, ZS. Recsan

Purpose: To study the effectivity of lasertherapy for Zone I and Zone II ROP.

Patients and Method: 61 premature babies underwent an argon laserpexy for threshold ROP in 1998. Mean gestational age was 28,5 (24-35) weeks, mean birth-weight was 1090 (630-2000)grs. 25 patients had Zone I and 36 babies had Zone II disease. Treatment was carried out with argon laser under the control of binocular indirect ophthalmoscope.

Results: Zone I: 2 patients were excluded from analysis ( 1 underwent a combined treatment of laser- and cryopexy for having tunica vasculosa lentis and the other failed to come to control).46 eyes of 23 babies were analysed. Favourable outcome was achieved in 24 eyes. Stage V disease developed in 15 eyes (dispite treatment at proper time in 6 eyes and because of late treatment posibility in 9 eyes). Stage IV/b developed in 4 and stage IV/a in 3 eyes.
Zone II: 70 eyes of 36 babies underwent laser therapy. Favourable outcome was achieved in 56 eyes, mild dragged optic disc developed in 4 eyes, 2 eyes developed stage V. 4 children failed to come to regular control.

Conclusion: Argon laserpexy carried out at proper time is an effective treatment modality of ROP. The prognosis of Zone I disease is less favourable than that of Zone II.
