FUNCTIONAL RESTITUTION AFTER SURGERY FOR RHEGMATOGENOUS DETACHMENT AS DETERMINED BY PATTERN-ERG

B. E. Haka, W. F. Schrader, T. Meigen

Purpose: We wanted to evaluate the restitution of the pattern-ERG response as a prognostic tool to determine the functional outcome after surgery for retinal detachment.

Patients and methods: 16 patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment reaching centrally within the 30º visual field were selected for the study within 6 months. Patients who received silicone oil and eyes with peripheral detachment only were excluded. Pattern-ERG and visual field was recorded prior to surgery as well as 5 days and 6 weeks postop.

Results: 12 eyes were phakic, 4 pseudophakic. 2 patients had recurrent retinal detachment. 1 eye was excluded from the study after retinal surgery was complicated by a vitreous hemorrhage. 13 patients who reported of their first signs of a detachment less than 10 days before surgery had a quicker amelioration of the ERG amplitude by a factor of 2 as compared to 2 patients with a longer history who had this restitution after 6 weeks only. We observed a better restitution in younger patients (<70 years old, n=9) than in older patients (*70 years old, n=4)

Conclusions: Functional restitution is quicker in patients with a short history of retinal detachmant as in patients with a longer history. Younger patients had better pattern ERG results than older ones.
