PTERYGIUM EXCISION: INTRAOPERATIVE APPLICATION OF MITOMYCIN C vs. LIMBAL STEM-CELL TRANSPLANTATION

R. Ivekovic, Z. Mandic, V. Lacmanovic

Many techniques of pterygium surgery with various rates of recurrence are described in the literature. The aim of this prospective study was to compare the results of pterygium excision with single intraoperative application of low-dose mitomycin C (0,25 mg/ml) with results of limbal stem-cell transplantation. We have operated 48 eyes with primary pterygium - 23 eyes with application of mitomycin C (MMC) and 25 with free transplantation. Patients were followed up for signs of recurrences and complications. We have noticed 5 recurrences in the group of patients with MMC application after mean follow-up 12,8 months. In the second group there were 2 recurrences after mean follow-up 13,3 months. Delayed conjunctival healing was observed in all cases operated with application of MMC. The both techniques reduce the recurrence rate after pterygium excision, but we prefer free stem-cell transplantation.
