Small pupil phacoemulsificationM. Kohlhaas
Introduction: Small pupil phacoemulsifikation is very difficult. We report our results of the use of irisretractors compared to a normal cataract population at our department.
Method: In the years 1996-1999 121 patients were operated with irisretractors after an insufficient pupilstreching (group 1). The intra- and postoperativ complications were compared with a controlgroup (100 patients, group 2).
Results: In group 1 78% were treated with miotics, in group 2 31,7%. In group 1 70,6% were operated before 1 to 3 times, in group 2 33,3%. In group 1 7% capsule ruptures and 5% anterior vitrectomies happened, in group 2 4,8% and 2,5%. In group 1 only 38,1% had round pupils after the operation, in group 2 92,7%.
Discussion: Patients with small pupils need preoperativly a thoroughly preparation and a postoperativly treatment and control. Pupils remain round by a slowly and not maximal dilatation of the used irisretractors.
