The assessment of driving capability by the ophthalmologist and the neighbouring medical subdisciplines

B. Lachenmayr

The ophthalmologist has to assess the visual capability of an applicant for a driver`s license. He has to give a judgement whether or not the applicant is able to participate savely in road traffic. The same holds true for those drivers who are already holders of a special license and have to be checked again because of medical reasons or because of legal regulations. The ophthalmologist has to take into account both legal regulations (Fahrerlaubnisverordnung, FeV; Anlage 17 StVZO), he also has to consider the recommendations of the German Ophthalmological Society. In some cases doubts may arise concerning visual capability with respect to perception and reaction, despite the fact that the ophthalmological findings are not an immediate exclusion for participating in road traffic. In many cases a traffic psychological assessment has to be performed by a traffic psychologist in order to test preception and reaction, in some cases a medical statement of an neurologist or psychiatrist, doctor of internal medicine or other disciplines may be necessary. The circumstances will be clarified under which conditions such additorial statements by a neighbouring medical discipline may be required by the ophthalmologist.
