Treatment of upper and lower eyelid injuries concerning the lacrimal duct system with a silicon intubation

L. Wiegmann, M. Gaszczyk, M. Kohlhaas

Introduction: A retrospective study on the years 1990- 1999 about 47 lacrimal duct injuries will give information about the structure of the patientcollective and point out results of the ophthalmosurgical procedure.

Methods: In the years 1990- 1999 there was a lacrimal duct reconstruction with a silicon intubation done on 44 patients, with an age distribution of 1- 74 years. The sex relationship showed 25% females and 75% males, the average age was 30.8 years. The mechanism of injury showed: 20% trafficaccidents, 23% violence, 48% houseaccidents and 9% jobaccidents. 63% of the patients hurt the lower eyelid, 23% the upper eyelid and 14% both eyelids. The average hospitation period was 3,2 days.

Results: A reestablishment of the lacrimal duct system through silicon intubation was possible in 44 out of 47 cases proceeding the treatment. The average implant- period of the silicon tube was 101 days. 9 of 44 patients had to have a resurgery (wedgeresection, conjunctival suture, shortening/ correction of the silicon intubation, granuloma removal).

Conclusion: The lacrimal duct reconstruction with a silicon intubation is an obligate and successful method in case of a lidinjury with involvement of the lacrimal duct system. A silicon intubation period of more than 3 month should be an achievable target.
