The effect of topical Cyclosporin A (2%) eyedrops in atopic and vernal keratoconjunctivitis
I. Tomida, T. Schlote, M. Zierhut
Purpose: To investigate the effect of additional topical Cyclosporine A (CsA) in the treatment of atopic and vernal keratoconjunctivitis.
Material and methods: 26 patients with atopic (group 1) and 12 patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (without any signs of atopy; group 2) who had shown insufficient response to topical antihistamines or lodoxamide (seldom corticosteroids, n=6) before were treated additionally with CsA (2%) eyedrops t.i.d. or q.i.d. Symptoms and findings were assigned to scores (-1 to 25), depending on manifestation (itching, tears secretion, foreign body sensation, spasm of eyelid, pain) and frequency.

The median score for symptoms could be reduced from 16.05 (± 4.04) on first examination to 9.08 (± 2.94) on last examination (group 1), in group 2 from 13.58 (± 3.42) to 8.10 (± 2.47) on last examination.
Conclusion: Additional CsA (2%) eyedrops have been shown to be effective in the treatment for atopic and vernal keratoconjunctivitis, as they improved considerably the condition of these patients.
