Accommodation and presbyopia current state of the science
D. Uthoff
Introduction: The theories relating to accommodation and the development of presbyopia are still widely varied and still controversal discussed. The reasons for this lie in the fact that it is at present still not possible for accommodation and the onset of presbyopia to be analyzed in all their details with regard to the dynamics and causes involved.
It follows from this that new theories about accommodation are put forward over and over again, theories which contradict one another, and in part are not sustainable due to the facts already outlined.
Current research into accommodation is based on the results of the various different theories put forward hitherto, and in this context the Helmholtz Theory plays a major part.
Based on new results of research in relation to accommodation and desaccommodation, the role of lenses, the ciliary body, elastic suspension, and other structures involved with accommodation are being redefined. In this context, the question of desaccommodation in the sector of elastic suspension has taken on a major role.
The contribution aims to compare old and new theories of accommodation, and consider the causes of presbyopia and the latest aspects of research. The current possibilities of presbyopia surgery will also be discussed.
