(‚Early vs. Late Infantile Strabismus Surgery Study-Group´)

Summary: The "ELISSS" is a European group of strabismologists and orthoptists that investigate whether early or late surgery is preferable in infantile strabismus in a prospective, multi-centre trial. Infants age 6 - 18 months receive a standardized entry examination and then are operated ei-ther before age 24 months in clinics A, or between age 32 - 60 months in clinics B. The child-ren are evaluated at age 6. The two groups will be compared regarding degree of binocular vi-sion, angle of strabismus and relative visual acuity of the worse eye. During the clinic recruitment phase (may 1993 to october 1996) 58 clinics from 11 European countries joined the study and recruited a total of 532 patients, 231 children early and 301 late. We hope that in 2003 the study will be able to address the question whether early or late surgery for infantile strabismus is preferable. At the end of 2000 almost half of the patients will have finished their final examination.
