Relevant clinical aspects of photodynamic therapy

H. Laqua

Many questions arise because photodynamic therapy is a new treatment in ophthalmology just on the egde of approval.

This overview focuses on relevant clinical aspects of PDT.
1. Different lasersystems and photosensitizers
2. Current studies and results
3. New indications and prognostic important factors for AMD
4. Theories of PDT mechanisms
5. Current status of the GKV approval process
6. Combined efforts of DOG and BVA for quality assurance measurements and the establishment of KV-certified instruction classes
7. Identifiable treatment failures as observed up to this date

In order to prevent false developments in the introduction and application of PDT consensus between those interested in laser medicine and the scientific and professional interest groups is crucial. Additionally an ongoing and well coordinated guidance of the procedure with an expert commission should be undertaken.
