Retina implant: Perspectives for the 2nd phase
P. Walter
After demonstrating the feasibility of a retinal prosthesis during phase 1 of the Retinal Implant Project (1995-1999) a second phase started with the goal to develop a prototype prosthesis. Therefore the two research consortia (EPI-RET, Eckmiller, Bonn and MPD-A, Zrenner, Tübingen) were put together to a large research team. Both approaches, the epiretinal approach and the subretinal approach have to be evaluated. Neurophysiological experiments should clarify if retinal stimulation either from the epiretinal side or from the subretinal area yield cortical reactions with spatial resolution and not only phosphenes. After successful demonstration of this experiment, we will start with pilot experiments in humans with acute stimulation. After a further step forward in technology and after a safety assessment concerning the long-term biocompatibility a prototype will be certified according to the German Medical Product Law, as a prerequisite to begin with a pilot study for chronic implantation in humans.
