Viscocanalostomy: Results of a clinical study (May 1998 to March 2000) at the Department of Ophthalmology, Charité Berlin

Background: The viscocanalostomy with deep sclerectomy according to Stegmann’ s techique, a non-penetrating procedure for open angle-glaucoma, is a most promissing glaucoma surgery as alternative to trabeculectomy.

Patients and methodes: Since May 1998 xy eyes of xy patients (middle age xy years) received viscocanalostomy. Out of these x patients underwent combined viscocanalostomy with phacoemulsification. Following types of glaucoma underwent surgery : PCOAG in x, pseudoexfoliative glaucoma in x, congenital glaucoma in x, glaucoma due to pigmentdispersion, . Prior glaucoma surgery patients received lasertrabeculoplasty, Nd:Yag-iridotomy, cyclophotocoagulation, cyclocryocoagulation, goniotrepanation, trabeculectomy in %.of the cases. Postoperative complications included hyphema, contemporaly hypertony, hypotony with chorioidal detachment, IOP spike. In x cases a revision had to be performed and led to a decrease of IOP of x.By x patients a cyclophotocoagulation was necessary.

Conclusion: a following prospective, randomized study will the efficiency of viscocanlostomy as an alternative technique with low risk of side effects.
