Zonula and capsular bag extension during implantation of foldable IOLs: An experimental laboratory studyG. U. Auffarth1,2, Q. Peng2, B. Daines2, D. J. Apple2
Implantation of foldable IOLs can be performed by forceps or injectors. The unfolding of the IOL can stress the capsulr bag and the zonules depending on the implantation- and folding method used.
We used the Miyake Apple Posterior View Video Technique to analyse zonular and capsular bag extension during implantation of Acrylic (Alcon Acrysof, Allergan AR 40) or Silicone IOLs (Pharmacia 911A). Two different Folding/Unfolding Techniques (Forceps) (6h-12h and 3h-9h) were evaluated in human autopsy eyes. In addition complicated situations, such as anterior capsular tears, posterior capsule rupture or zonular dehiscence were simulated and the possebilities of foldable IOL implantation in these instances were demonstrated.
