Multimedia online database ophthalmology (MODO)

Background: More than 50 per cent of all physicians expect, that Internet will develop to important information system in health care. Using the possibilities of the Internet will definitely result in easier diagnosis and education in the medical fields.

Aims: Creation and publishing of free multimedia online database ophthalmology (MODO).

Methods: Communication technique: The ophthalmologic data and images are in the SQL-database on LINUX-platform available. All of HTML-MODO-sites were generated dynamically. Content: This Multimedia Online Database Ophthalmology (MODO) contains various entries like clinical images, free-text diagnosis, ICD-10-key and brief comments. Partial are clinical cases available with fluorescein angiogramms, histological images, duplex ultrasound pictures, CT- and MRI-scan, as well links to similar lectures with audio and video presentations. The majority of pictures were courtesy of the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. As a special teaching tool for medical students in the ophthalmology is a clinical image quiz with 25 new generated photos and multiple-choice-questions available. Feedback with MODO-users was provided in form of an anonymous survey on the MODO-homepage. Quality assurance: each part of the MODO will be responsible edited and supervised by specialists of international standing. The Internet-address of the MODO is www.onjoph.com/modo

Results: currently refers MODO more than 1000 images with free-text diagnosis and ICD-10 key and is being continuously enlarged: in January 2000 11,095 hits of 350 users have been registered. Since 7.1.2000 70 users have completely filled out the survey sheet. By 95% was the general impression of MODO "excellent" or "good".

Conclusion: Close cooperation between specialists in communication technologies and ophthalmologists allows creating and publishing multimedia online databases in ophthalmology.
