Functional and morphological results after transpupillary thermotherapy for choroidal melanomaC. Zeumer, M. B. Reichel, P. Meier
With transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) a new treatment modality of choroidal melanoma becomes available. Here we report results with 25 Patients.
Patients: 25 patients with choroidal melanoma were treated by transpupillary thermotherapy (Iris Medical diode laser, spot size 1.5 3 mm, 60 sec, 400 -1000 mW) following Ru-106 plaque therapy. Off those three patients were treated with TTT alone. Indocyaningreen- and fluorescein-angiographies were performed before and after TTT. The tumor was documented with ultrasonography and fundusphotography at all visits.
Results: Prior to TTT the average thickens was 2.8 mm in comparison to 0.6 mm 3 6 months post treatment. Angiography revealed a complete occlusion of choroidal and tumor vasculature in the treated area. Follow up was max. 2.5 years with an average of 10 months. Visual acuity was reduced in two eyes.
Conclusions: With its possibility of precise dosage and localisation transpupillary thermotherapy provides an effective tool for adjuvant treatment of choroidal melanoma. In combination with brachytherapy additional loss of vision is rare.
