Phototherapeutic keratectomy in recurrent corneal erosionsS. Giessler, G. I. W. Duncker
Background: Recurrent corneal erosion is a common clinical disorder charaterised by repeated spontanious breakdown of corneal epithelium. The pathomachnism is due to abnormalities of the adhesion complex between the corneal epithelium and the stroma.
Beside the medical local treatment, the bandage lenses, the debridement and the anterior stromal puncture we can treat the patients with excimer phototherapeutic keratectomy.
Methods: We present a series of 40 eyes underwent a transepithilial therapeutic excimer photoablation.
Results: After the first PTK treatment 32 eyes remained asymptomatic, 6 eyes had persistent symptoms and 2 eyes remained asymptomatic after the second traetment.
Conclusions: Excimer laser PTK appears to be safe and effective procedure for recurrent corneal erosion. Relative Contraindications, e.g. the history ofchemical burn, must be consider.
