Purpose: Dispersive and cohesive viscoelastic substances differ fundamentally by their physical and bio-chemical behaviour.
Methods: In a standardised experimental laboratory study using human cadaver eyes the retention of flourescein stained Viscoat® (=dispersive) and Pro Visc® (=cohesive) were investigated in the anterior chamber during phacoemulsification using the Closed System Technique as described by Auffarth et al. After the phacoemulsification was finished the corneas were trephined and the endothelial coating with Viscoat®/ProVisc® was quantified with a image analysis program.
Results: The mean endothelial cover using Viscoat® was 43,9 ± 16,9% of the posterior corneal endothelial surface area, using Pro Visc® 2,2% and by combining of both viscoelastics 55,0 ± 3,9% using the Soft Shell Technique.
Conclusions: The dispersive Viscoat showed a very good endothelial protection during the whole procedure of phacoemulsification.
