Laser Therapy of Intraocular Neoplasms

Augsburger J. J.

University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

Purpose: To evaluate the role of laser therapy in treatment of selected intraocular neoplasms.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of published case series and personal experience.
Results: There are no published clinical trials of laser therapy versus other management methods for intraocular neoplasms. All available information about effectiveness of laser therapies comes from uncontrolled, nonrandomized clinical studies. Laser therapy alone is clearly able to obliterate some small intraocular neoplasms. However, it is frequently associated with local tumor relapse that then requires more aggressive therapy. Laser therapy combined with plaque radiotherapy increases the rate and completeness of regression of choroidal melanomas and appears to reduce the rate of local relapse. Similarly, laser therapy as a supplement to chemotherapy increases local treatment success in retinoblastoma. Photodynamic therapy has been used with considerable success in treatment of small circumscribed choroidal hemangiomas.
Conclusions: Laser therapy appears to have a limited role in treatment of intraocular neoplasms.
