Zentrum der Augenheilkunde, Klinikum der Johann Wolfgang Goethe- Universität, Theodor-Stern-Kai 7, 60590 Frankfurt am Main

Objective: To compare the results of anterior chamber depth measurement between one ultrasound and two optical measurement devices.
Methods: In 29 eyes of 18 cataract patients, anterior chamber depth (from the corneal epithelium to the anterior surface of the lens) was measured using the ultrasound device Model-ABD (Innovative Imaging), the optical biometry instrument IOL-Master (Zeiss) and the anterior segment measurement system Orbscan II (Orbtek).
Results: The average anterior chamber depth was 3.31 ± 0.34 mm with the ultrasound measurement, 3.13 ± 0.34 mm with the IOL Master and 3.30 ± 0.53 mm with the Orbscan. Correlation coefficient was 0.18 for ultrasound vs. IOL-Master, 0.53 for ultrasound vs. Orbscan and 0.41 for Orbscan vs. IOL-Master.
Conclusion: Although all measurement devices delivered similar average results, there was only weak correlation between the measurements. The measurements on a single individual may differ widely.
