Background: Cataract-extraction with the implantation of an intraocular lens is one of the most performed operations. The visual outcome after cataract-surgery depends on the accuracy of the calculation of the IOL. The Zeiss IOL-Master™ is an easy to use instrument compared to immersionsultrasound and ophthalmometry by Zeiss.
Methods: We examined in total 331 by Zeiss IOL-Master™ and immersions-ultrassound (G.B.S.) and ophthalmometry by Zeiss. We compared axial length, anterior chamber depth (ACD) and keratometry.
Results: The measured axial length of 295 eyes (268 phacic, 23 pseudophacic and 4 aphacic eyes) with Zeiss IOL-Master™ showed a mean value of 23.54mm±1.65 mm (range 20.81mm to 34.97mm), with the immersion-ultrasound the mean value was 23.55mm±1.74mm (range 20.53mm to 33.03mm). The difference between this two methods of measurement was 0.09mm±1.36mm. We compared the ACD of 309 eyes. Zeiss IOL-Master™ showed a mean ACD of 3.22±0.49mm, the immersionsultrasound showed a mean ACD of 3.26±0.48mm. The difference of measurement was 0.04±0.26mm between this both methods. Keratometry were evaluated of 248 eyes. Zeiss IOL-Master™ showed mean values of HH1=7.77±0.32mm and HH2=7.61±0.27mm and for ophthalmometry by Zeiss mean values of HH1=7.78±0.33mm and HH2 =7.58±0.28mm. This means a difference of 0.004±0.16mm for HH1 and of 0.03±0.13mm for HH2.
Conclusion: This study leads to the conclusion, that both methods show comparable results for the data of axial length, ACD and keratometry.
