Selective Corneal Aberrometry with a Placido-Topometer

Bende T., Jean B., Berret R., Oltrup T.

Universitäts-Augenklinik, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen

Purpose: Selective Corneal Aberrometry (SCOA) and its components with regard to optimizing the outcome after refractive surgery will be demonstrated.
Methods: With the new C-Scan Windows software it is for the first time possible to evaluate the optical quality of the cornea with very high resolution qualitatively and quantitatively. Result is the Surface Quality Map (SQM) which allows interpretation of corneal aberration and assessment of the Functional Optical Zone (FOZ). Modular Transfer Function (MTF), Phase shift and Point Spread function (PSF) are also assessable.
Results: The factors presented here describe the most relevant parameters of optical corneal quality, which in general is changed after refractive surgery (until now mostly decreased).
Conclusion: Based on the content of SCOA, the platform for customized refractive surgery is created. Optical quality is beneath the Visual Acuity a major criterion to qualify outcome after refractive surgery. Unknown is, if total aberration (wavefront), which includes the age-dependent aberration of the lens, is necessary or not.
