Department of Ophthalmology, K.Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences, 61-848 Poznan, Poland, Dluga street 1/2

Objective: The aim of the study was the evaluation of function of the retina of the fellow eye in patients with different kind of retinal detachment
Material: 43 patients, 19 women and 21 men, aged between 18 and 80 years, (mean age 46 years), divided into 3 groups: A) with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (34 patients) B) with secondary retinal detachment (6 patients) C) with retinoschisis associated retinal detachment (3 patients) Method: the full ophthalmological examination, specially with exact examination of the periphery of the retina of the fellow eye, and standard flash ERG including scotopic and photopic investigation performed with Toennies Multiliner Vision equipment.
Results: In group A- patients without myopa in the fellow eye, the shape of ERG and its parameters were reduced in 31% and the negative-type flash ERG was found in 25%. In group -A patients with myopia in the fellow eye, the shape of ERG and its parameters were reduced in 50%.There was the negative-type of ERG in 42%. In group -B the parameters were reduced i 50% of cases. In group -C, wave -b of ERG were reduced.
Conclusion: The electrophysiological investigations are very useful in evaluation of the function of the retina in the fellow eye in patients with different kinds of retinal detachment. Reduced electrophysiological parameters correlate with morphological changes of the retina mainly in myopic patients. Futher examinations should be continued to explain why there is so frequent the negative-type of flash ERG in these patients.
