Erbium-Yag Laser Vitrectomy: 2 years experience

Binder S., Stolba U., Kellner L., Krebs I.

Department of Ophthalmology, L. B. Institute of Retinology and biom. Lasersurgery, Rudolf Foundation Clinic, A 1030 Vienna, Austria, Eu

Purpose: To describe our clinical experience with an Erbium-Yag Laser combined with an infusion and suction system for pars plana vitrectomy.
Material: Over 2 years different settings of energy and cutting rates as well as end tips of 2 different lasers have been tested on 139 consecutive patients with a wide range of indications for p.p. vitrectomy.
Results:
- Erbium-Yag laser reduces time for central vitrectomy, creates lesser traction on tissue and shearing forces
- Different end tip geometries are needed to complete a vitrectomy.
-Variability of cutting rates between 20 and 70 Hertz, as well as energy levels between 5 and 40 mJoules is needed for precise and safe tissue dissection.
- The combination with a high profile suction system is necessary to compete with high speed cutters.
- No laser associated complications did occur in this series.
