Silicone oil removal through posterior capsulorhexis simultaneously with phacoemulsification and PC-IOL implantation

Biro Z., Kovacs B.

Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Pécs, Hungary.

Purpose: To investigate the intraoperative and postoperative complications and the functional results of patients undergoing simultaneous cataract extraction and silicone oil removal after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV).
Patients and methods: Retrospective analysis of the data of nine eyes of 9 patients, operated with this combined surgery. The essence of our new surgical technique is, that BSS through a pars plana infusion washes out the intravitreal silicone oil though the posterior capsulorhexis and the pupil. Difficulties of this combined surgical procedure are also discussed.
Results: There was no severe intraoperative complication, however temporary corneal edema was observed in two eyes, and retinal redetachment developed in four cases after surgery. Change in visual acuity was moderate, due to retinal pathology.
Conclusions: With this combined surgical technique silicone oil can be released simultaneously with cataract extraction, providing faster rehabilitation to the patients. Visual acuity is usually poor due to retinal pathology, and despite the careful surgical technique retinal redetachment develops in a large proportion of patients within three months.
