Cataract extractions following the implantation of phacic posterior lenses

Bleckmann H.

Schlosspark-Klinik, Heubnerweg 2, 14059 Berlin

Background: Formation of a secundary cataract following the implantation of phacic posterior chamber lenses (STAAR) has been described by several authors without exhibiting a convincing explanation for the reason of this complication.
Patients and Methods: 4 myopic eyes of 3 patients and 2 hyperopic eyes of one patient of a total number of 148 eyes with an ICL-implantation revealed a reduction of the visual acuity after 4 to 17 months according to a cataract formation. The opacification was mostly within or below the anterior capsule.
Results: All of the cataract operated eyes revealed the same best corrected visual acuity afterwards compared to the best corrected acuity after phacic lens implantation. The acuity was between 0.5 (high myopia) and 1.0. All of the patients were within the presbyopic age. Neither the extraction of the phacic lens nor the cataract extraction of the concerned eyes revealed major events.
Discussion: Reason for the cataract formation after phacic lens implantation might be a non existing distance between the phacic IOL and the crystaline lens. This could partly be demonstrated in these eyes.
