Objective: This investigation aims to an answer of the question
"how good is normal (physiological) visual acuity during the developmental
years"? At what age we reach the best acuity?
Methods: We examined 102 young people between 12 and 14 years of
age, 91 out of them had healthy eyes, refractive anomalies beyond plus
or minus 5 diopters or spherical equivalent, no squint, no organically
based diseases of the visual system. Examination procedure followed the
EN ISO 8596 norm. We used Landoltrings (LR) in 8 different positions of
the gap. The LR were exhibited on a monitor in 2 different arrangements:
First single optotypes, second LR in a horizontal line separated from
each other by an interspacing of 2.6 min. of arc (C-Test). For a threshold
just above 50% we asked for 6 correct identifications out of 10 shown
LRs.
Results: The mean uniocular visual acuity reached 1.6 ( median
and geometrical mean as well ) with a standard deviation of 0.86 (steps
of acuity) for single LR. The acuity for line LR was 1.42 (geometrical
mea) and a median of 1,6, SD 0.86 steps which was significantly lower
than using single LR. The 95% percentile reached an acuity level of 2,0.
Compared with unpublished data gathered in a group of 6 to 10 years old
children ( Dissertat. Mediz. Hamburg, D. Staiger) the young people aged
12-14 years reached a significantly higher level of visual acuity. In
comparison with Chang and Haase (1999), who examined people from 15 to
19 years of age, and Hautzinger and Haase (1997), who examined people
from 20 to 30 years of age, we could not find any significant higher result.
Conclusions: The physiological visual acuity should not be intermingled
with the epidemiological mean of acuity. We wanted to know what is possible
in healthy people at what age of development. We assume that the visual
acuity reaches the highest level at about the age of 12 and stays constant
to a minimum age of 30 years. Using line LR the results will be about
half a step lower than using single optotypes.
