Neuronal control of the intraocular pressure

Intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of the main risk factors for the development
of an glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Therefore understanding of the regulation
of the IOP is of substantial interest. At first previous knowledge about
fine regulation of the IOP will be presented, like the supply of different
nerve fibers to ciliary body and trabecular meshwork, and the influence
of neurotransmitters on the secretion of aqueous humor and the tone of
tension of the trabecular meshwork. In the second part, the importance
of this knowledge is transferred to the clinical aspects of the primary
open angle glaucoma, for example the daily IOP-amplitudes of about 15
mm Hg, and at the same time the disturbance of other neuronal triggered
circuits, like the autoregulation of the optic nerve or the regulation
of the blood pressure.
