The relationship between postoperative vision and preoperative stability of fixation with SLO microperimetry in patients treated with macular translocation surgery

Fujikado T., Tano Y.

Dept. Ophthalmology and Applied Medical Engineering Osaka University Medical School, Suita

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between postoperative vision and preoperative stability of fixation evaluated by SLO.
Methods: Preoperative stability of fixation was assessed by calculating the standard deviation (SD) of the coordinate of fixation points using SLO microperimetry. Best corrected postoperative visual acuity was assessed at least 6 months after surgery. Thirty two patients with either age related macular degeneration (n=22) or myopic neovascular maculopathy (n=10) who underwent macular translocation surgery were examined.
Results: Postoperative visual acuity was negatively correlated with the SD of the coordinate of fixation points (r=-0.43, P=0.014; Pearson).
Conclusions: Although several factors may influence the surgical outcome, the preoperative stability of fixation evaluated with SLO is a useful parameter to predict the postoperative vision.
