Lions Croatian Eye Bank - five years overview

Gabric N., Dekaris I., Karaman Ž., Mravicic I.

Lions Croatian Eye Bank, Ophthalmology Departement, "Sv. Duh" General Hospital, Sv. Duh 64, HR 10000 Zagreb, Croatia

Background: Prior to foundation of Lions Croatian Eye Bank (LCEB) keratoplasty was not routinely performed in Croatia. First keratoplasty with non-stored tissue was performed at our Department in 1991. War situation slowed down the opening of LCEB till December 1995. Basic equipment was provided grace to the help of local and international Lions clubs. Today, LCEB has all the necessary equipment and educated staff. Its main activities are collection, storage and evaluation of donor corneas, scleral and amniotic membrane preservation, clinical work, informatic activity, tissue donation promotion, organization of educational courses/meetings and research.
Methods: Before the Eye Bank was established, only 137 "moist chamber" corneas were grafted. In last five years number of grafted corneas increased to 313 keratoplasties (all with stored corneas). Donor tissue was stored in either intermediate-term storage (55%) or long-term storage media (45%). The overall survival rate of corneal grafts was 84,8%, regardless of the storage method.
Results: Amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) was performed in 146 eyes with following indications: A) persistent corneal ulcer (n=40), B) corneal epithelium defects (n=48), C) symptomatic bullous keratopathy (n=30), D) ocular combustion with/without symblepharon formation (n=13), E) recurrent pterygia (n=15). Results after AMT were: A) healing of the corneal ulcer was recorded in 50% of eyes and significant reduction in ocular inflammation in 100%, B) re-epithelisation in 72% of eyes, C) 90% of eyes became asymptomatic, D) ocular surface showed less vascularisation/inflammation and eye motility was satisfactory, E) prevention of pterygium regrowth in 70% of eyes.
Conclusions: After review of LCEB procedures, Croatian eye bank has been accepted as a member of European Eye Bank Association (EEBA) and International Federation of Eye and Tissue Banks (IFTEB). LCEB was organizer and host of the XIth EEBA Conference (Zagreb, January 1999) and currently acts as "web-site" co-ordinator of EEBA.
