Comparison of phoropter and aberroscopy refraction

Objective: To compare the reliability and accuracy of refractive error measured by aberrometer to subjective refraction (phoro- optometer).
Methods: In a prospective study 39 adults (77 eyes) age range from 21 to 48 years underwent subjective refraction (phoropter) and aberrometry (Zywave, Bausch & Lomb) with undilated pupils.
Results: For 77 eyes of 39 adults correlation coefficient (R) for spherical values comparing subjective manifest refraction to the predicted phoropter refraction (aberrometry) was 0.99. Comparing values of cylinder R exceeded 0.95. Correlation coefficient for spherical equivalent was 0.99.
Conclusion: Aberrometer seems to be an additional device in defining refraction. It provides reliable information about spherical and cylindrical values compared to subjective manifest refraction.
