Brinzolamid eye drops 1% for Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy

Groeschel W., Weindler J.

Augen-Praxisklinik, Neckarstr. 71, 73728 Esslingen

Purpose: To compare the effect of Brinzolamid 1% (AZOPT®) and placebo eye drops on the inflammatory reaction and the intraocular pressure after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy.
Methods: This prospective, randomized and double-blind study compared 2 groups of up to now 20 eyes each undergoing Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy ( ZEISS VisuLas YAG II plus ). Group A was treated with Brinzolamid 1% and group B was treated with placebo each 30 minutes before capsulotomy. The intraocular pressure is measured by applanation tonometry and postoperative inflammation by KOWA Laser-Flare-Meter FM-500 pre as well as 3 and 24 hours post Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy.
Results: Group B (placebo) showed neither an increase nor a decrease of intraocular pressure after capsulotomy. Group A (Brinzolamid 1%) showed a significant intraocular pressure decrease 3 hours after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. The group receiving placebo showed a significant increase of laser flare 3 hours postoperatively. The group receiving Brinzolamid 1% showed no significant changes in laser flare.
Conclusion: Brinzolamid 1% eye drops seems to be sure to decrease intraocular pressure while not sure to be affecting postoperative inflammatory reaction in normal (no-risk) eyes undergoing Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy.
Brinzolamid-Augentropfen 1% zur Nd:YAG-Kapsulotomie.
