Introducing a new stratified classification and management guide for lasik complications

Gulani A. C.

Laser Refractive and Corneo-Plastic Surgery, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Florida, Jacksonville, Florida, USA

Purpose: To introduce a new classification system for Lasik complication reporting and analyze outcomes at the micron level.
Method: This Stratified classification assigns Lasik complications to the three tiers of lasik tissue components ie. Corneal section, Interface, and Stromal bed, thus aiding analysis of corneal complications and focused correction of the same. Corneal complications having occurred over 1 year during LASIK with over 500 eyes were evaluated and preventive and management strategies discussed.
Results: Most of the corneal complications were technique and instrumentation related. Assignment of corneal complications to their respective levels (Tiers) in the cornea assisted a better understanding and effective management of the same.
Conclusions: Prior pilot check and dedicated pre-op testing with adequate preparation for unusual eyes can significantly decrease the incidence of corneal complications. This classifications system introduces the concept of micron analysis in the field of Laser refractive surgery.
