Haas A., Feigl B., Weger M.

Department of Ophthalmology, Karl Franzens-University of Graz, Austria

Objective: To assess the effiectiveness of a single transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) in patients with exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Patients and Methods: In a prospective pilot study 14 patients with a mean age of 78 years (range: 70-92years) with subfoveal choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) due to exudative age-related macular degeneration were treated with a single TTT with diode lasere (810 nm). Seven patients had a classic and 7an occult CNV. Laser beam size with a Volk Transequator lens was 4.5 mm, power setting was 800 mW and the expostion time 1 minute.
Results: Twelve out of 14 patients could be followed for a period of 18 months, the best corrected visual acuity ranged between 0.05 and 0.3 prior treatment and between 0.2 and hand movement after the follwow up period.. Stabilisation of the visual acuity was achieved in two patients, 10 patients lost three or more Snellen lines. In none of the patients a regression of the CNV could observed immediatly after TTT. Inactive fibrotic scars developed in 6 patients at the end of the study.
Conclusion: Our results suggest that TTTaccording to our protcol has no beneficial effect on the spontaneous course of the CNV in patients with AMD.
