Intrastromal refractive surgery with ultra-short laser pulses - first invitro experiments

Goal: To investigate the opportunity and techniques using ultra-short laser pulses for the intra-stromal ablation of the cornea.
Method: A laser-induced plasma was generated 100 to 300 microns below Bowmans membrane in the focus of a Ti:Saphir lasers (l=805 nm, pulsewidth: 115 fs, energy: ca. 3.3 µJ). Arbitrary transections were possible in the corneal stroma scanning the laser. All Experiments were performed in porcine eyes one to four hours post mortem.
Results: A 150 µm thick disc was excised 150 µm below Bowmans membrane and extracted through a keratotomy performed by the laser. Sharp cut edges as well as the change in corneal thickness were observed by slit-lamp biomicroscopy.
Conclusions: Ultra-short laser-Pulses are suitable for precise intrastromal ablation.
