Hyperferritinemia cataract syndrome- a case report

Background: Juvenile and presenile cataracts ask for further etiologic
evaluation.
Case: A 23 year old female presented with increasing photophobia
and problems driving. Her sister shares the same problems. Her father,
paternal aunt and cousin already had cataract surgery on both eyes. Slit
lamp examination showed bilateral white spot-shaped opacities of the lens.
A blood test revealed an isolated elevation of the ferritin level.
Conclusions: We demonstrate a case of a familiar bilateral hyperferritinemia
cataract syndrome.
