Universitätsklinik für Augenheilkunde und Optometrie, Refraktive Ambulanz, Wien, Österreich

Purpose: To compare near vision quality of two different intraocular multifocal concepts.
Methods: In 11 eyes 10 patients with a diffractive multifocal IOL (811E , Pharmacia) and 12 eyes of 9 patients with a refractive multifocal IOL (SA 40N, Allergan) the best corrected visual acuity was determined. Using the near contrast visual acuity charts (Holladay) the contrast sensitivity over the near focus was determined in a distance of 40 cm.
Results: The best corrected visual acuity in the diffractive group was Snellen 0.94 ± 0.13 in the refractive group Snellen 0.90 ± 0.08. The contrast sensitivity was in the refractive group at 100% 12.53 lines ± 1.24, at 50 % 10.84 lines ± 0.86, at 25 % 9.33 lines ± 1.38, at 12.5 % 8.36 lines ± 1.48 und at 6.25 7.07 lines ± 1.29. In the refractive group at 100% 10.08 lines ± 1.03, at 50 % 8.88 lines ± 0.80, at 25 % 7.58 lines ± 1.05, at 12.5 % 6.65 lines ± 1.04 und at 6.25 % 5.73 lines ± 1.06. The evaluated contrast differences were statistically significant at all contrast levels.
Conclusion: The near contrast sensitivity in the diffractive multifocal lens is significant better.
