Low-power-laser-therapy of amblyopia in adult patients

Ivandic T.

Rindermarkt 16, 80331 München

Amblyopia and strabism are caused by impaired sensory-neuronal development of the visual tract resulting in permanent loss of visual capacity. If started in early childhood, occlusion or blurring of the leading eye has been a therapeutic choice with sometimes insatisfactory results. We now report first experiences with a novel low-power laser therapy in 110 eyes with amblyopia and 121 eyes with strabism and show that normal visual capacity can be achieved in adult patients. After repeated short lowpower laser irradiation (3-4x) every 2-3 days, significant improvement of vision could be achieved in about 90% of amblyopic eyes. Visual improvement appeared to depend on the extent of former visual impairment and required additional therapy for preservation of the initial success only in a few cases. The promising results of this laser therapy may warrant further controlled studies to investigate the longterm efficacy and safety of this novel therapeutic approach. The advantages raise hope to establish it as an alternative to traditional treatment.
