Amniotic membrane in the treatment of neuroparalytic keratitis

Purpose: The aim of this study is to determinate wheather amniotic
membrane can be used to treat neuroparalytic keratitis.
Methods: Amniotic membrane transplantation was performed in 6 patients
with neuroparalytic keratitis. All patients were younger than 50 years
and in all of them the problems with cornea developed after neurosurgical
operations. The follow-up period in all patients was longer than 12 months.
Postoperatively in all patients fluorescein test and biomicroscope examinations
have been performed, as well as subjective evaluation of pain.
Results: After operation the pain was reduced in all patients.
In one patient the second transplantation was performed 2 months after
the first operation because of recurrence. After the second operation
the pain was minimised for more than 13 months.
Conclusions: Amniotic membrane transplantation appears to be a
good method in reducing pain and achieving better epithelial healing in
patients with neuroparalytic keratitis.
