Functional results after phacic posterior chamber IOL-implantation (ICL®): Two years follow-up.

Keuch R. J., Bleckmann H.

Schloßpark-Klinik, Abteilung Augenheilkunde, Berlin

Background: To evaluate the effectivity and the security of phacic posterior chamber lens implantation (ICL®) after a two year follow-up time focusing on the stability of the refraction and the rate of cataracts.
Patients and Methods: 85 myopic and 24 hyperopic eyes received an ICL. The follow-up time was 20,4 ± 7,7 months. All patients received the most recent ICL-version (ICM-V4 and ICH-V3). The mean age of the patients measured 42,7±11,9 years.
Results: The uncorrected visual acuity raised from 0,14 to 0,82 and the corrected acuity increased from 0,82 to 1,07. Within the hyperopic patients the uncorrected visual acuity increased from 0,33 to 0,72 whereas the corrected visual acuity changed from 0,96 to 0,93. Preoperative, ametropia measured -8,6 ± 4,3 D within the myopic patients whereas the hyperopic patients presented a mean of 3,6 ± 1,7 D. The deveation of the intended emetropia measured -0,45 ± 0,72 D within myopic eyes and 0,26 ± 0,78 D within hyperopic eyes after the two year time-period. There was a trend towards an undercorrection within very high hyperopes and myopes but 56% were within ± 0,5 D after two years. More of the hyperopic patients revealed pigment on the ICL (p<0,01) and a trend to a higher vaulting was to be seen within hyperopes (p=0,08). Alltogether 4,6% of the eyes had to be operated on a cataract, that had presented within the follow-up period. High myopes seemed to be at risk for the development of a cataract. One eye demonstrated a retinal detachment after 12 months.
Conclusion: The refraction following an ICL-implantation was stable within the time period observed. The overall cataract rate measured 4,6% to date.
