Multicenter study of wavefront-guided LASIK

Knorz M. C.

FreeVis LASIK Center, Universitätsklinikum Mannheim, 68135 Mannheim, Germany

Laser in situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is currently based on subjective manifest refraction. In a prospective multicenter sutdy we evaluated the results of wavefront-guided LASIK.
Methods: We measured ocular aberrations with the Zywave aberrometer (Bausch & Lomb Inc.) and treated 203 eyes with myopia and astigmatism based on these measurements (SE -4.41 D +/-2.45 D) using the Technolas 217Z excimer laser. Postoperatively, refraction and visual acuity were evaluated.
Results: Three months postoperatively, 52 eyes were examined to date. Spectacle-corrected visual acuity was two or more lines lower than preoperatively in 2%, the same as preoperatively in 47%, one line better than preoperatively in 35%, and two or more lines better in 16%. For comparison, following standard-LASIK with the same laser, spectacle-corrected visual acuity was one line lower than preoperatively in 7%, the same as preoperatively in 58%, one line better in 32%, and two or more lines better in 4% (results submitted to the FDA; Bausch & Lomb Inc.).
Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that visual acuity following wavefront-guided LASIK is comparable to that of standard LASIK. In addtion, an increase of maximum visual acuity was observed in some cases.
