Purpose: We investigated the potency to inhibit posterior capsule opacification (PCO) of an intraocular lens (IOL) with a modified backside design.
Methods: 19 patients underwent cataract surgery and recieved an experimental IOL in one eye and an control IOL in the other eye. The mean age of the patients was 70,1 (54-79). Visual acuity (Regan-Chart) und PCO rate (fibrosis and pearls) of both eyes were measured each year - for three years. Mann-Whitney rank-sum-test was performed.
Results: There was no statistically significant difference 1 resp. 3 years postoperatively between the visual acuity with the experimental and the control IOL (p=0,6443 and p=0,2638). Concerning the PCO rate a statistically significant difference 1 year postoperatively (p=0,0031) was seen, but not in the third year (p=0,0201). For the whole period of the study we could not find a difference between the two groups concerning the YAGrates (p=0,6135).
Conclusion: There was no advantage in the visual acuity for the experimental lens, though we found a lower rate of PCO in this lens in relation to the control IOL.
