The retinal degenerations and retinal detachment in fellow eyes

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of peripheral retinal degenerations and retinal detachment ( RD ) in fellow eyes to ones that had been operated on RD.
Methods: The data of the fellow eyes of patients who had had a scleral buckling procedure or a primary vitrectomy for idiopathic rhegmatogenous RD between 1996 and 1998 were retrospectively analyzed. Only eyes with primary rhegmatogeneous RD were included. Exclusion criteria were posttraumatic RD, as well as tractional and exsudative RD.
Results: 94 eyes were included in the study. At the end of follow-up period (April 2001) 64 eyes were phakic, 30 pseudophakic (16 with posterior capsule open after YAG-laser capsulotomy). In 5 fellow eyes ( 3 male, 2 female patients, age between 58 and 83 years) a RD occurred during the postoperative follow-up. 4 of these eyes were still phakic, one pseudophakic. The time until the occurrence of the RD in the fellow eye ranged from 9 years and 0 days (in one patient the RD was diagnosed at the presentation on both eyes). In 25 eyes a argon-laser photocoagulation and in 4 eyes a retinocryopexy has been performed to treat peripheral retinal degeneration or retinal tear. 65 fellow eyes did not require further treatment. The frequency of bilateral retinal detachment in our group of patients was 5,3%, the frequency of retinal degenerations requiring treatment 30,9%.
Discussion: In our series, the frequency of bilateral retinal detachment was 5,3%. It is at the lower range of data reported in the literature ( 5-19%). We tend to see the reason in early diagnosis and treatment of predisposing retinal changes. The frequency of treated peripheral retinal changes including retinal tears was 30,9%.
