Biomechanical stretch experiments of the lens-zonula-ciliary body apparatus

Koopmans S., Terwee T.

Department of Ophtalmology, University of Groningen

Purpose: to investigate relationships between age, lens thickness, lens diameter and lens focal length change during radial stretch of human donor lenses.
Methods: human donor lenses were radially stretched in a mechanical stretch apparatus simulating accommodation. Simultaneously lens focal length, lens thickness and lens diameter were measured.
Results: during stretch lens focal length decreased, lens diameter increased and lens thickness decreased. Older lenses showed less focal length changes then younger lenses.
Conclusion: accommodative changes can be modelled and studied in human donor lenses. The results are in agreement with theories which explain presbyopia by decrease of lens elasticity.
