Objective: Evaluation of Snellen visual acuity does not describe the whole variety in the use of our visual system and the problems caused by its dysfunction. Scandinavian and anglo-american studies deal with measurements of quality of life in patients undergoing cataract surgery. The aim of this study was to transform the visual function index (VF-14) into social, cultural and linguistic conditions in german-speaking countries.
Methods: The english version of VF-14 was revised, translated and retranslated. The modified VF-14 contains questions according to visual function in different everyday situations and questions to self-ranging of visual acuity The answers lead to a score between 0 and 100%. In our study we handed over the VF-14 to 101 patients the day before cataract surgery. 93 of these filled in the forms. Further interviews with the same questions follow 2 and 6 months postoperatively.
Results: There was a strong conformity with the reference study of Steinberg et al. (1994) in terms of mean visual function values and of sociodemographic part of the investigation. In terms of global self-ranging, German population showed a higher level of satisfaction and a lower level of difficulties in visual aquity compared to the reference study. Self-reports on levels of satisfaction and difficulties showed correlations with the VF-14, but not with the Snellen visual acuity.
Conclusion: There is a good correlation between this questionnaire and literature references, which underline that modified VF-14 could be a useful basis for further investigations. To answer the question which influence cataract surgery does represent on life quality can be answered after evaluation of postoperative questionnaires, which is a work in progress.
