Permanent Corneal Ring in Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK-RING)

Purpose: Stabilization of postoperative refraction, acceleration
of healing, reduction of immunological rejection (ImRe).
Method: A 8 mm Cobalt/Titanium/Molybdenumalloy ring was sutured
into PKP wound.150 consecutive cases(GR I) with minimum follow-up 1 year,
identical control group(GR II).
Results: Postop cylinder was -2,5 D (GR I) to -2,90 (GR II). Refraction
was stable in GR II both cylinder and axis changed by. In GR I 1 ImRe
occurred with 5 ImRe in GR II. Sutures could be removed after 3 months
in GR I.
Conclusion: PK Ring seems to accelerate healing, may reduce immune
reaction. Astigmatism is little influenced.
